I've been asked a lot lately about why I am making Deacon's baby food. Here are my reasons:
1st - I enjoy it. I love picking out the produce and being picky about what I get.
2nd - I know what will go into his food. I can make sure there is no salt or preservatives added.
3rd - Cost! Its much cheaper to make your own than it is to buy the jarred food.
I have bought him bananas and pears that were already made. Earth's Best Organic 2.5 oz jars are $.89 each at Kroger, making them $.36/oz. Gerber's Organic 2 pack of 2.5 oz containers are $1.29, making them $.26/oz.
I can buy green beans by the pound for $.59 and I usually buy 2 lbs. After they are steamed, pureed and dished out into the 1 oz ice cube trays I can fill at least 2 trays (usually more). So for $1.18 I get at least 24 oz of green beans and it costs me about $.05 per ounce.
So if you really want to see the savings you can look at it this way...right now he is eating 5 oz of baby food a day, on an average day. That's 35 oz a week. This is how much it would cost me all three ways:
(This is all based on the price of green beans)
Week:
35 oz of baby food
Earth Best - $12.60
Gerber - $9.10
Homemade - $1.75
Year:
Earth Best - $665.20
Gerber - $473.20
Homemade - $91.00
So I am saving between $574.20 - $382.20 a year. That seems like a bargain to me!

We make our own food over here too. Has Deacon tried Blueberries yet? I mix a carton of blueberries with a Banana and Ava love it! Plus she gets lots of Antioxidants too. I also have been know a time or two to borrow some if it to mix in my oatmeal as well!
ReplyDeleteI haven't made any fruit yet. I will try that. Do they puree easily without water or do you add it? You can give him anything with a banana and he loves it. LOL I plan to use up some of these cubes myself. Maybe make a pureed veggie soup.
ReplyDeleteI don't recall using water, but I honestly with soft fruits I don't pay too much attention to the thickenss. I mix fruits with her Oatmeal so I adjust the thickness after it's all mixed if needed.
ReplyDeletewow! what a deal!
